The founders started The Breadbasket because they loved to entertain. The current owners feel exactly the same way.

The founding of The Breadbasket

The Breadbasket was founded in 1984 by Herman and Bertha Toevs. They wanted the restaurant to be a place where they could gather with friends and neighbors in one of the two dining rooms to have a cup of coffee, a little bite to eat and discuss things amongst themselves. It didn't take long for things to catch on.

Pretty soon Bertha added lunch to the menu and people all over Newton were buzzing about the fantastic new place to dine for any meal or occasion.

In 1992 Craig and Marilyn King took the business over and began adding new items and expanding the operation.
